My 13 year old slept in the second bedroom and it was very cozy. Announcements only in Spanish...now there's an idea! Selection of food at buffet was generally good. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to your very own private balcony. Stylish and sophisticated appointments enhance these modern rooms.
Ship Overview
The shower was also a good-sized tub, but I can see that less mobile people would struggle to lift a leg over it to step into the shower. There is body wash and shampoo in containers on the wall of the shower and the toilet is in a small room off the bathroom. The cruise left out of the Manhattan Cruise Port. We took the train in from Connecticut, and we overnighted in Ink 48, which is an excellent hotel just a block from NCL’s pier 88 in Hell’s Kitchen. This is a seemingly safe neighborhood that has little to do in walking distance, though the Landmark Tavern is a place for good food and drink.
The Haven Deluxe Owners Suite
We ate at Moderno, which everyone loved. Definitely save room for the grilled pineapple! La Cucina surprised me with how good it was - I got an alfredo with mushrooms and it was probably one of my favorite meals on the ship. And my husband and I both enjoyed stopping by the Sushi Bar for a roll or two before dinner some nights. And then there is “The Haven,” a private area of sophisticated luxury suites and villas atop the ship that can only be accessed by a special key-card protected entrance.

Pool musicians were very good quality...played some lovely music...also a spanish singer with a guitar...loved him. Serving a wide variety of culinary delights to please every palate, our complimentary dining options include two main dining rooms, a help-yourself buffet and a variety of casual cafés, grills and on-the-go choices. Plus, our Main Dining Rooms offer a menu that changes daily, Chef's Signature Dishes and carefully selected wine recommendations, guaranteeing a different culinary adventure with every visit. Adult and kids’ pools plus hot tubs are located on deck 12 and, quite naturally, are popular destinations for most guests.
If you are an active person, you’ll definitely want to spend time on deck 13, where you’ll find a walking/jogging track; a golf cage; a tennis/volleyball/basketball court; shuffleboard; a climbing wall; and larger-than-life chess and checkers’ games. Just around the corner from the spa is the Pulse Fitness Center, a full-scale gym for adults only that allows you to exercise while taking in the view. Exercise classes (yoga, Pilates, stretching, cycling) and personal training sessions are available for an added charge. O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, which serves 24 hours a day and is located on Deck 8, is set above the Atrium on the ship and serves traditional pub grub like burgers and fries. We stayed in the 2BR Family Suite and it was absolutely perfect for a family of 4. My 10 year old slept on the pull-out couch in the living room, and even being 6 inches away from the balcony, with the curtains closed the room was very dark.
With so much to do, we’ll always have you coming back for more. Many passengers come prepared for the ship's theme nights, one of which is the popular Glow Party, an amped-up version of the ship's former White Hot Party, where passengers are encouraged to wear white or neon clothing. The best part of this room is the perks that come with a suite (butler, concierge, priority embarkation and debarkation, special dining options, etc.) without having to pay for the Haven. We used all the extra amenities and would say it was 100% worth it - having the suite really made our vacation.

Liquor packages run $109/day, though you must buy a full package rather than individual days. Soda packages run $9.95 a day and Starbucks packages $12.95 a day (the coffee bar is located in the Atrium on Deck 7). A premium beverage package including all beverages is $138 per person/per day. All beverages can also be purchased a la carte. Bottles of water can be purchased on board as well, but there are also free “hydration stations” situated throughout the ship.
The Gem is considered a mid-size ship (about two-thirds the size of the newest NCL ships, the Prima and Viva). We have cruised on other lines before, and this was our first experience on NCL. First of all, I loved the Gem - the ship is perfectly sized for me. It was easy to get around, and there were lots of areas to sit and hang out with a book and a drink.
There was a divider built into the room between the very comfy bed and the couch, which pulls out into a bed; we didn’t notice the divider on our previous Gem cruise. There was a minifridge that included a container of water; you need a specific drink package to get containers (cardboard bottles) of water without paying extra. On the way back from Bermuda, when the seas were rough, our cabin was less rock-and-roll-y than I heard other cabins forward, aft, and/or higher were. The food by far exceeded my expectations - even the buffet! I am not a buffet fan, and yet we found ourselves there pretty often and I enjoyed pretty much everything I tried.

I also loved the deck 6 bar area where the martini and wine bars and Maltings are situated. There was really nice seating all around and my husband and I enjoyed MANY delicious martinis while gazing out the windows and people-watching. It was way too crowded around the pools...just not enough sun beds or space.

Upon request the first night, our room steward brought us bath robes, a mattress topper, and an extra roll of toilet paper. My wife asked for a coffee machine, but it never arrived. We saw our room steward twice the entire cruise, which was much, much less than our previous cruises and less than we preferred. He did a good job making up the room around our schedule, though, and we left a tip each day.
The huge tv screen in the reception lounge was very glaring...no one could watch it with its glaring neon psychedelic colors, heat images and electro funk clips...how this added to the ambiance of the room i'll never know. And to top it, they put the classical quartet playing in front of it. It needs something more relaxing and beautiful to watch to match the music and purpose of the room.
